MLJET, an
island in the southern Dalmatian archi-pel-ago, south of the Peljesac
Peninsula, separated from it by the Mljet channel; area 100.4 sq km;
population 1,237. The relief is characterized by ranges of limestone
elevations and numerous karst valleys and fields (Polacno, Ivanovo, Blatsko,
Kneze Polje). South of the highest crest (Veli Grad, 514 m) is the largest
field zone (Babino Polje). |

Mljet the first
large island we come upon while sailing the Croatian sea from the direction
southeast to northwest. In historical times, the entire island was inhabited
by the Illyrians. The Greeks, on their way to Lumbarda (island of Korcula)
and other Adriatic settlements arrived there are stayed due to the water and
bad weather. |

Babino
Polje, a village in the central part of the island of Mljet, 6 km southeast
of the Sobra harbour, 18 km southeast of Polaca; population 398. It lies in
the field of the same name, at the foot of Veliki Grad (Big Town) (514 m),
the highest peak of the island. The surroundings are covered with underbrush
and pine forests. Arable land around the village is cultivated, comprising
gardens, olive-groves and vineyards. The opposite coast on the southern side
is characterized by cliffs and coves with nice beaches (Sutmiholjska,
Brnjestrova). Babino Polje is located on the island road. |

GOVEDARI, a
village in the interior of the north-western part of the island of Mljet, 5
km above the Veliko Jezero (Big Lake) bay; population 179. Chief occupations
are farming, viticulture, olive growing and fishing. Govedari is located on
the regional road which runs along the entire island of Mljet. Govedari is
the only larger settlement in Mljet National Park, and also the seat of the
national park management. The village is connected with Pomena (a nice cove
with Hotel Odisej and various sports and recreational facilities), the
Polace harbour and Veliko Jezero. |

KORITA, a
village in the interior of the eastern part of the island of Mljet, 7 km
east of Maranovici; elevation 208 m; population 90. The chief occupation is
farming. Korita is located on the regional road running along the island.
orita, surrounded by greenery, are equally distant from the open sea on one
side and the Mljet Channel on the other side. The village was named after
stone troughs that were used as water containers during rainy days and
filled with water from the nearby source. The closeness to the sea and the
quietness of peaceful island seclusion make Korita a pleasant destination. |

MARANOVICI,
a village in the interior of the south-eastern part of the island of Mljet,
14 km southeast of Babino Polje; elevation 115 m; population 60. Chief
occupations are farming and livestock breeding. Maranovici is located on the
regional road running throughout the island. |

OKUKLJE, a
village and harbour in the cove in the eastern part of the northern coast of
the island of Mljet, 11 km east of Babino Polje; population 16. It serves as
a port of the villages in the interior, Maranovici and Korita. Chief
occupations are farming, viticulture, olive growing and fishing. The coasts
of the well protected bay are largely covered by vegetation. Okuklje lies on
a local road. |

POLACE, a
village in the bay bearing the same name, in the western part of the
northern coast of the island of Mljet; population 123. Chief occupations are
farming and fishing. The bay is 5.6 km long and up to 3.9 km wide; it is
protected by a range of small, almost completely bare and unpopu-lated
islands (Moracnik, Tajnik, Kobrava, Ovrata). Due to the closeness to Veliko
and Malo Lakes, Polace is also the harbour of the Mljet lakes. The village
has sources of potable water. The regional road connects the village with
other places on the island. |

POMENA, a
village and small harbour in the cove bearing the same name, on the western
coast of the island of Mljet, 2 km west of Govedari; population 50. In the
19th century it was called Pomina. Chief occupations are farming, fishing
and tourism. Po-mena is located on the regional road running along the
island. In front of the cove is the islet of Pomestak. The cove provides an
excellent dock for yachts. |

PROZURA, a
village in the interior eastern part of the island of Mljet, 3 km east of
Sobra; elevation 202 m; population 78. Chief occupations are farming and
livestock breeding. Prozura is loc-ated on a regional road running along the
island. Tourism is related to Prozurska Luka, which is one of the favourite
destinations of boaters. Local fish restaurants offer excellent seafood. |

SAPLUNARA,
a village and cove in the south-eastern part of the southern coast of the
island of Mljet; population 32. The cove is enclosed by a thick forest of
pine. It consists of Velika and Mala Saplunara; both have potable water
sources. The sea in large shallows reaches a temperature of over 28 °C in
summer. The regional road via Korita connects it with other towns and
villages on the island, as well as the lakes to the west of the island. |

SOBRA, a
village and harbour in the Sobra Bay on the northern coast of the island of
Mljet, 7 km east of Babino Polje; population 68. Chief occupations include
farming, viniculture, olives, fruit growing, fishing and tourism. The
surrounding slopes are covered with forests of pine and macchia. Sobra is
situated on the regional road running along the island. Sobra has a ferry
port. |
